A few months ago, SWAROVSKI OPTIK added some new binoculars to the CL-linup where the Companion 8x30 and 10x30 already were part. SWAROVSKI OPTIK was so kind to let me test the 10x30 version during my photo trip in Kenya earlier this year.

Binoculars are quite similar to the camera lenses in the photography world. So, it is clear that everything has to do with the amount of light coming trough the different lenses, the diameter of these lenses and of course also with the quality of the glass used and some coatings. High quality binoculars are quickly recognizable by the sharpness of the image, the true colors and good ergonomics to keep the binoculars in your hands.
When unpacking, I immediately noticed the sense for details: the binocular is not packed in a standard brown cardboard box, but it is neatly packaged in a beautifully designed box and it is protected by a pleasant feeling pouch. The package also includes a strap for the binoculars itself and of course rubber covers to protect the lenses. A cleaning kit isn’t provided, but is sold separately.
The binocular itself is compact and very light (515gr). It feels good in my hand and due to the compact form (only 119mm long) allows me to wear it around my neck for several hours.
Besides the design and the weight, the most important thing is however the picture in your viewfinder. I can be very brief about this: the picture is perfect! The image is sharp across the entire field of vision. A colleague of me brought a cheap viewer on the trip and we could both notice the differences in less than a second: the Companion provide a greater range, sharper images, brighter colors and is easier to keep steady.
As a matter of fact, keeping the image steady appears to be a problem for several other binoculars, but not for this Companion. With one hand you do need to have some practice, but with two hands it is a breeze!
Furthermore, I was very satisfied with the way of focusing. This is smooth and very accurate. Adjusting the eyecups has cost me some trouble, but this learns quickly.
For the price of € 1050 (official retail price), this binocular is yours. Not really cheep, but in my opinion, it is a real investment for life.
UPDATE:
When writing this review, the “African version” of the binoculars was added especially for safaris!
